This is a basic introductory course of current optical fiber communication system. In this course, you will learn the basic concept of optical fiber, some selected fiber devices, and optical communication systems, including Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) system, analog CATV system, and optical networks. This course will focus more on the physical la<x>yer design of optical fiber communication systems. Some basic and frequently used optical network protocols will also be introduced. This course is suitable for seniors and graduate students who are interested in both communications and electro-optics and would like to pursue further studies on the physical la<x>yer of optical communication systems and devices.

Introduction: Evolution of telecommunication systems and networks 2. Characteristics of optical fiber: Basic characteristics of optical fiber: optical fiber geometries, wave propagation in fiber, fiber dispersion, fiber attenuation, fiber nonlinearities and fiber fabrication. 3. Optical Fiber Components: Passive Devices: star couplers, WDM couplers, array-waveguide grating (AWG), attenuators… etc. Active Devices: transmitter, receiver, modulator, optical amplifier… etc. 4. Optical Fiber Systems System design and performance, multiple wavelength channel lightwave system (WDM), soliton communication systems, analog CATV system and challenges of next generation optical fiber communication systems. 六、成績考核(Evaluation) Homework (every other week): 20%, Midterm Examination: 40% Final Examination or Term Paper & Oral Presentation 40% 七、可連結之網頁位址
